Point 6

Prepositions of Time

(“Preposisi Waktu”)

1. During / for (selama / untuk) :

During” menunjukkan bahwa dua peristiwa terjadi pada saat yang sama :

Contoh :

  • I fell asleep during the movie
  • I was living in San Fransisco during the big earthquake
  • For” menggambarkan lamanya waktu :

Contoh :

  • I slept for 2 hours
  • I haven’t seen her for 5 days

2. By / until (dengan / sampai) :

Jika ada perubahan kondisi, gunakan “by

Contoh :

  • The package is not here now. It will be here at 5 : 00 pm.

  • The package will be here by 5 : 00 pm
  • I am not finished now. I will be finished at lunch.

  • I will finish by lunch
  • Jika kondisi / situasi tidak berubah, gunakan “until

Contoh :

  • I am waiting now. I will be waiting at 5 :00 pm.

Tidak ada perubahan dalam kondisi (wait-wait). Oleh karena itu, gunakan preposisi “until

  • I will wait until 5 : 00 pm
  • I work here now. I will work here during the summer.

  • I will work here until the summer

3. Through / throughout (melalui / seluruh) :

Through –  adalah preposisi gerakan

Contoh :

  • Please go through the office and down the hall
  • It is more difficult to pass through customs if you cannot speak the language
  • Throughout  – adalah preposisi waktu

Contoh :

  • He is in and out throughout the day
  • The airport is busy throughout the year – not only during the summer

4. Before / by (sebelum / oleh) :

Before biasanya menjelaskan persiapan sebelum peristiwa lain, dan lebih umum

Contoh :

  • You should check departure time before leaving for the airport
  • You should always check the price before handing over you credit card
  • You must complete this introductory course before starting the intermediate course
  • By biasanya Menjelaskan waktu berakhir

Contoh :

  • Please make sure that you arrive by 05 : 00
  • You have to finish by this evening

5. Ketika Anda berbicara tentang hari libur, Anda dapat mengatakan “on” atau “at”. “On” berarti bahwa hari tertentu, sedangkan “at” berarti waktu secara umum

  • On Christmas = on December 25th

At Christmas = Late December, early January

Contoh :

  • Children can only open their present on Christmas morning (on the 25th)
  • At Christmas, there is often snow (the entive time around Christmas)
  • On New Year’s (Day) = January 1st

At New Year’s = December 26th to early January

Contoh :

  • It is difficult to wake up on New Year’s (January 1st)
  • People try to pay off debts at New Year’s (around the time)

6. At the beginning / in the beginning (pada awalnya) ; At the end / in the end (pada akhirnya)

Ini adalah kasus hanya ketika “at” lebih spesifik daripada “in

Gunakan “At the beginning/end” ketika Anda berbicara tentang acara khusus, misalnya book, movie, relationship, dll. Hal ini diikuti oleh frase preposisi “of …”

Contoh :

  • I didn’t understand the story at the beginning of the book, but I figured it out half way through
  • Gunakan “In the beginning/end” ketika Anda berbicara tentang sebagian besar atau hal yang paling

Contoh :

  • I didn’t like him the first time I met him, but in the end we became good buddies

7. In time / on time (dalam waktu / tepat waktu)

in time” berarti “tidak terlambat”.

Contoh :

  • The flight leaves at 07 : 30, so you need to arrive at 05 : 30 at least to be in time for customs
  • Because of work, many fathers cannot arrive in time for their children concert at school

“On time” berarti “pada waktu yang tepat diatur”.

Contoh :

  • One of the rudest things that you can do is not arrive on time for dinner
  • It is normal to arrive late for a party, but not for a dinner party

8. Using prepositions to put event in order (Menggunakan preposisi untuk menempatkan acara dalam rangka).

9. Events in the past (acara di masa lalu)

Bila Anda ingin mengatakan “before now“, Anda dapat menggunakan kata “ago

Contoh :

  • He arrived two days before now = He arrived two days ago
  • She was ready two hours before now = She was ready two hours ago
  • Events in the future (acara di masa depan)

Untuk menunjukkan sesuatu yang akan terjadi “after now“, gunakan preposisi “in

Contoh :

  • I will finish ten minutes after now = I will finish in ten minutes
  • I will meet you there half an hour after now = I will meet you there in half an hour
